A welcome from the Director of Senior College

Senior College is an exciting stage in a student’s education: a time when greater independence brings new opportunities, responsibilities and choices.

At Queen’s, we want students to feel confident in making those choices for themselves. Our close-knit community allows us to know each student individually, understand what motivates her and provide the right balance of challenge, encouragement and support as her ambitions develop.

The Senior College years are also a chance to look beyond examinations and think seriously about what comes next. We encourage students to explore their interests, take intellectual risks and make the most of the opportunities around them, while developing the independence and self-belief they will carry into university, work and adult life.

Academic Studies: Most students study three A-level subjects, providing both academic challenge and the time to develop the wider skills, interests and experiences that prepare them for university and beyond. Alongside their A-levels, many pupils choose to complete the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), worth half an A-level, which offers an exciting opportunity to research an area of personal interest in depth and develop valuable independent study skills. Others may choose to study a fourth A-level, complete a Sports Leadership Award or take part in the Young Enterprise programme. In addition to their academic studies, all Senior College students take part in our Academic Enrichment Programme, University Application Support programme and Employability & Careers Programme. They also undertake weekly volunteering or work experience alongside timetabled Physical Education and PSHE lessons. Dedicated private study periods throughout the week enable students to consolidate their learning, prepare for lessons and develop the academic curiosity and independent learning skills that are essential for success in higher education.

Sixth Form Centre: Our dedicated Sixth Form Centre, located on the modernised fourth floor of the College, provides an inspiring environment in which to study, collaborate and socialise. Modern classrooms, seminar-style teaching spaces and a welcoming common room with a kitchen area create a space that Senior College students can truly call their own, supporting both focused study and relaxation during the school day.

Co-Curricular Opportunities: Life in the Senior College extends far beyond the classroom. Students are encouraged to embrace the wide range of co-curricular opportunities available, whether through drama productions, music ensembles, dance, cheerleading, competitive sport or one of the many clubs and societies on offer. These experiences help students discover new interests, develop confidence and build friendships.

Student Leadership: Leadership is also an important part of the Queen's experience. Senior College students have the opportunity to mentor younger pupils, offering academic and pastoral support, and many choose to apply for leadership roles that contribute to the life of the school. These experiences foster responsibility, initiative and teamwork, while giving students the confidence and skills to make a meaningful contribution to the Queen's community and beyond.

Senior College A-level Entry Requirements

Entry to the Senior College is based on strong GCSE performance, with subject-specific requirements designed to ensure students are well prepared for A-level study. For most subjects, students will be expected to achieve at least a grade 7 in the subject, or in a closely related subject, although requirements vary and are higher for some courses.

The requirements can be met either in the Year 11 November mock examinations or in the final GCSE examinations.
