Bursaries at Queen's College, London
The Queen's College Bursary Fund provides means-tested financial assistance to talented girls who would otherwise be unable to benefit from a Queen's education. A family can apply for means-tested bursaries on entry at both 11+ and 16+.
If College funds permit, a bursary can provide up to 100% remission of fees, depending on a family's financial circumstances. Bursary applications for entry at 11+ should be submitted as early as possible in the year prior to entry.
Bursaries may also be awarded if parents' circumstances change dramatically during the course of a student's time at the College. To see the deadline for bursary applications (and all other Admissions deadlines) please visit the Admissions page.
Bursary awards are, however, available only to pupils who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom and whose families meet the School's financial eligibility criteria. International applicants and families who are not ordinarily resident in the UK are not eligible for bursary support. In addition, applicants seeking a boarding place in the Sixth Form are not eligible for bursary assistance, irrespective of nationality or country of residence.
A bursary may be awarded in addition to a scholarship if financial support is necessary.
For further information please contact our Head of Admissions on admissions@qcl.org.uk.
Bursary FAQs
-
Who can apply for a bursary?
Families who are applying for a place in Year 7 (11+) or Year 12 (16+) at Queen's College, London may apply for bursary support. All bursary applications are assessed based on demonstrated financial need and a review of the family's income, assets, savings, and overall financial circumstances.
-
What is the household income threshold for bursary eligibility?
As a general guide, families with a gross annual household income above £110,000 will not normally be eligible for bursary support.
However, all applications are considered holistically, taking into account income, debt, assets, savings, and property ownership.
-
What are Transformational Bursaries?
Transformational Bursaries are intended for families facing significant financial constraints and for whom a Queen's College education would otherwise be inaccessible.
Families may be considered for a Transformational Bursary if:
-
Household income is below £44,000 per annum; and
-
The family has minimal or no significant assets, savings or investments; and
-
The family does not have substantial property equity.
-
The child meets the academic requirements for entry.
-
-
Are partial bursaries available?
Yes. The College offers partial bursaries for families who demonstrate financial need but do not qualify for a Transformational Bursary.
Awards typically range between 50% and 95% of school fees, depending on the family's assessed financial circumstances and the funds available.
The College may, at its discretion, award a temporary or “bridging” bursary to families experiencing short-term financial hardship or a sudden change in circumstances. These awards are intended to provide time-limited assistance and will generally be granted for a specified period, after which the bursary will be reviewed or end.
-
Will owning a second property affect my application?
Yes.
Families who own a second property, whether in the UK or overseas, will not normally be eligible for bursary support.
-
How much equity can we have in our home and still qualify?
Families with more than £250,000 equity in their primary residence will not normally be eligible for bursary assistance.
Equity assessments will form part of the financial review conducted during the application process.
-
Are savings taken into account?
Yes.
Families with more than £25,000 in savings, investments, or readily accessible capital will not normally be eligible for bursary support.
The College expects families to make reasonable use of available assets towards educational costs.
-
What financial information will we need to provide?
Applicants will be required to provide comprehensive financial information, which may include:
-
Income details - tax returns, payslips, P60, Universal credit statements
-
Bank, building society, savings and investment statements
-
Mortgage statement or tenancy agreement• Property ownership details
-
Pension information
-
Details of any trusts or other financial arrangements
Additional documentation may be requested where necessary.
-
-
Can I apply for a bursary if I am resident overseas?
Bursary awards will normally only be available to pupils who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom and whose families meet the School's financial eligibility criteria.
The College's bursary programme is intended to support access to a Queen's College education for families demonstrating financial need within the UK.
The College's bursary funds are not available to support boarding places. Accordingly, applicants seeking a boarding place in the Sixth Form are not eligible for bursary assistance.
-
How are bursary applications assessed?
The College uses Bursary Assessment Associates (BAA) to undertake an independent financial assessment of all bursary applications.
Families must complete the required financial declaration and provide supporting documentation and will normally have a telephone or video call with BAA.
Recommendations are made to the College based on the evidence supplied, and all awards are at the discretion of the principal.
-
What happens if parents are separated or divorced?
The College understands that family arrangements can vary considerably following separation, divorce, or bereavement. We will work with parents sensitively and confidentially in accordance with data protection laws and regulations to determine the most appropriate way to assess an application. The school will work with both parents, or an individual parent where appropriate.
In most cases, we will require both parents to submit the bursary application. In certain circumstances, a lone parent application can be considered.
-
Is a bursary guaranteed if I meet the eligibility criteria?
No. Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee an award. Bursaries are awarded based on:
-
The outcome of the financial assessment process
-
The availability of bursary funds; and
-
Your daughter meeting the academic threshold to attend the College.
-
-
Do bursaries need to be reapplied for each year?
Yes.
All bursary awards are reviewed annually. Families will be required to submit up-to-date financial information each year so that eligibility and the level of support can be reassessed.
-
What happens if our financial circumstances change?
Families must notify the College if there is a significant change in their financial circumstances.
The College may review bursary awards during the academic year and reserves the right to adjust the level of support where circumstances improve or deteriorate substantially.
-
Will my application remain confidential?
Yes.
All financial information submitted as part of a bursary application is treated in strict confidence and handled in accordance with data protection requirements. Information is only shared with those directly involved in the assessment and administration of bursary awards.
The College Bursary governing group receives a summary report and recommendation from BAA to assist with its decision-making but does not receive the detailed supporting financial documents submitted by the parent as part of the assessment process.
